Fat Transfer for a Younger, Fresher Look
As we age, certain areas of the body, such as the thighs and midsection, are prone to developing deposits of fat. At the same time, the face and hands often lose youthful volume, resulting in a thinner look that is a telling sign of aging. Thanks to recent advancements in cosmetic surgery, there is a procedure that addresses both of these concerns at once. A fat transfer removes fat from one area of the body, and relocates it to the face and hands to achieve a slimmer figure and more youthful features. To find out if a fat transfer is right for you, contact our New Orleans area practice today and schedule a consultation with Dr. Benjamin Boudreaux or Dr. Jeffrey Claiborne.
A Closer Look at Fat Transfer
Fat transfer, also known as fat injections, fat augmentation, or fat grafting, is a procedure gaining popularity for the many benefits it provides. Fat transfer can be used to create improved body contours in one area of the body, often in the abdomen, flanks, thighs, or buttocks, by removing unwanted fat. The fat is then processed and used to fill areas of the face or hands that have developed a hollowed appearance. By introducing fat to these areas, lost volume can be restored, and lines and wrinkles can be softened.
Fat transfer is successful in treating:
-
Lost contour and volume along the mid-face and cheeks
-
The areas under and around the eyes
-
The lines extending from the nose and lip area, also known as nasolabial folds
-
The thin areas along the backs of the hands
Dr. Boudreaux also uses fat transfer to enhance the curvature and projection of the buttocks as part of a Brazilian butt lift procedure.
The Fat Transfer Procedure
First, you will have a private consultation with Dr. Boudreaux or Dr. Claiborne. At that time, they will review your medical history and determine if this procedure is right for you. In general, candidates should be in good overall health and have some pockets of excess fat.
On the day of your procedure, you will be made comfortable with a local anesthetic or general anesthesia. Dr. Boudreaux and Dr. Claiborne will then make small incisions at the treatment site and insert a tube called a cannula. By making a gentle back and forth motion, they will break up excess fat before it is suctioned out through the cannula. Once the fat is extracted, it will be processed and purified, so that the healthiest fat is available for reintroduction into the body. Finally, the fat is injected into pre-determined treatment areas to achieve the desired enhancements.
Benefits
Because fat transfer uses the patient's own tissue, the risk of complications is greatly reduced. Compared to implants, such as those used in cheek augmentation, there is no risk of the body rejecting the material. Unlike dermal fillers that require regular touch-ups, the results from a fat transfer are permanent.
Patients may elect to receive their fat transfer as a stand-alone procedure, or combine it with another facial cosmetic procedure, such as a face lift, for more comprehensive results.
