Labiaplasty Can Improve Comfort and Confidence

Dr. Benjamin Boudreaux and Dr. Jeffrey Claiborne perform labiaplasty with extreme care at our New Orleans, LA, practice. Childbirth, weight fluctuations, age, and genetics can lead to stretched or enlarged labia, causing women to experience difficulty with everyday activities such as exercising. It can even prevent women from wearing certain clothing, including swimsuits and jeans, out of discomfort or self-consciousness. At Northshore Plastic Surgery, Dr. Boudreaux and Dr. Claiborne tailor this treatment to fit each patient’s individualized needs, and can even combine it with other cosmetic procedures for a complete body makeover

What Is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is quickly becoming a popular cosmetic procedure among women in the United States who are struggling with excess labial folds and skin tissue. This surgical procedure involves the reduction or reshaping of the female genitalia. It is frequently requested by women with concerns including:

  • Inner labial lips that extend below the outer lips
  • Friction that leads to painful intercourse
  • Large labia that inhibit daily activities
  • Inability to wear certain clothing items
  • Hygiene difficulties
  • Self-consciousness about the appearance of their labia

Dr. Boudreaux and Dr. Claiborne will evaluate your medical history and perform a detailed physical examination during a consultation to ensure you are a good candidate for this procedure. If you qualify, he will present all the options available to you and create a treatment plan based on your individualized needs and concerns.

Dr. Boudreaux’s and Dr. Claiborne's expertise and training combined with our state-of-the-art surgical facility will ensure you achieve satisfying labiaplasty results.

What to Expect During Labiaplasty

Before beginning the procedure, Dr. Boudreaux and Dr. Claiborne will administer a local anesthetic and sedation based on the patient’s comfort level and complexity of the procedure. A labiaplasty can be completed with one of two surgical techniques: the edge technique or the wedge technique. The difference between the two is the type and location of incisions. During your consultation, Dr. Boudreaux and Dr. Claiborne will discuss both of the options with you to determine which is best.

For larger or uneven labia minora (inner vaginal lips), Dr. Boudreaux and Dr. Claiborne will first reduce and remove excess tissue with safe, conservative incisions. If necessary, he can also reduce the labia majora (outer vaginal lips) as well. Once excess tissue is removed, Dr. Boudreaux and Dr. Claiborne will carefully close the incisions with dissolvable stitches. The procedure can generally be completed in about an hour.

Recovering from Labiaplasty

Because this is an outpatient procedure, patients can return home the same day. Dr. Boudreaux and Dr. Claiborne will give you appropriate instructions and medications to soothe the area and improve healing. Keeping the surgical site clean will help prevent infection and other complications from occurring.

Each patient responds to surgery differently, but in most cases, the overall recovery can take up to six weeks. To minimize swelling and discomfort, take medications as directed, keep the pelvis elevated when lying down, and apply cold compresses. Swelling will diminish in about two weeks, and sutures will dissolve in about three weeks. Although normal activity can commence the day after the procedure, strenuous activity and intercourse cannot be conducted for four to six weeks after surgery, or as directed by the doctor.
