Acne Scar Treatment Can Provide a Healthier-Looking Complexion
Dr. Benjamin Boudreaux and Dr. Jeffrey Claiborne at Northshore Plastic Surgery in New Orleans, LA, can help patients reduce the appearance of acne scars and other facial imperfections. They will work closely with one of our well-trained estheticians and build a customized treatment plan to help you achieve your cosmetic goals and diminish acne scars. For patients with mild to severe scarring, our acne scar treatment options can include laser procedures, photorejuvenation, and a variety of chemical peels to help improve the tone and texture of your skin.
What Causes Acne Scars?
Certain forms of acne, such as cysts and nodules, can penetrate the deep underlying layers of the skin, causing increased inflammation and tissue damage. When this occurs, it can lead to acne scarring. You may have a greater risk of developing scars if you pop or squeeze acne or have a genetic predisposition to scarring.
As the tissue tries to heal itself after a breakout, collagen is released to help assist the body. As your skin ages, collagen production decreases, creating an imbalance in the way the body heals itself. Decreased collagen production not only inhibits the elasticity in your skin, but can make acne scars more prevalent. The two most common types of acne scars include: depressed acne scars (small pits in the skin) or raised acne scars.
Consulting With the Doctor
During your initial consultation, Dr. Boudreaux and Dr. Claiborne will examine your skin to gain a better understanding of the type of treatment necessary to address your concerns. If you are currently experiencing new acne breakouts, they will first need to be treated before undergoing acne scar removal. Performing acne scar treatment on existing acne breakouts can reduce the treatment’s effectiveness, as well as spread inflammation and cause further damage.
Available Treatments
Northshore Plastic Surgery offers a number of acne scar removal treatments. The treatments recommended for you will depend on the type and severity of your acne scarring.
Chemical Peels
For patients with existing acne, we can apply a light chemical peel containing salicylic, glycolic, or other alphahydroxy acids over the top layer of skin. When this special mixture is applied and combined with steam, it can removed damaged skin and eliminate blackheads, pustules, and comedones. Once the skin has peeled and naturally rejuvenated itself, a deeper chemical peel can be applied, containing a stronger acid to eliminate blemishes and acne scars. Multiple peels may be required until desirable results are achieved.
Intense Light Pulse Therapy
This photorejuvenation treatment uses quick pulses of light to treat the underlying layers of the skin and repair skin damaged by acne scars. As the intense pulses of light penetrate the skin’s surface, melanin is broken down into tiny particles. These particles may naturally resurface as scabs (that fade within a week) or are flushed through the lymphatic system.
PicoSure® Laser
As the most aggressive laser treatment we provide, PicoSure Laser technology can eliminate raised acne scars on your face, chest, and back. This treatment uses powerful laser technology to stimulate collagen production below the skin’s surface to minimize acne scars. It can also be used to treat other imperfections, such as sun damage, hyperpigmentation, and fine lines and wrinkles by removing the upper, damaged layers of skin.
